Carly Schmand's Coaching and Leadership
With Technology Showcase
Over the course of my Masters at Michigan State University, I learned about coaching, leadership, and technology and how they can be used in the classroom and on the athletic field. Below are some of the pieces of work that were the most influential to me during my coursework. I hope to use these pieces of work in my future endeavors whether I am teaching, coaching, or both! Positive Youth Development
SPYDER - Supporting Positive Youth Development with Elementary Recreation I developed an after school program that encourages positive youth development through sports. The program I named SPYDER: Supporting Positive Youth Development with Elementary Recreation, focuses on fostering positive youth development while exposing the children to a wide variety of sports while allowing them time to complete homework. I examine the potential participants, costs, staffing, and programming details as well as discuss ways to properly evaluate the organization and its impact on the students and society. Since many after school programs focus on either academia or sport specialization, my primary focus for SPYDER is to offer an educational and sport based opportunity for under-served and under-privileged youth to participate in. |
Coaching Philosophy
I was encouraged to self reflect about what my philosophy will be as a coach. I know that coaches serve as important role models to athletes by remaining steadfast in their own philosophies and much can be said about teachers and students. Through this paper I was able to explore my beliefs about the role of sport, functions or objectives, how to define success and winning, gender equity, racial equity, cutting players, the concept of pay-to-play and personal ethics and sportsmanship. All of these concepts are easily transferred to the classroom as well. |
Classroom Management
In this paper, I discuss my approach to what my classroom management will be when I have the opportunity to teach. My style is based loosely on the Reggio Emilia Approach (http://www.reggioalliance.org/faq.php#atelier) and shows what my behavior standards/expectations are, the physical arrangement/environment, student-student relationships/peer learning, student-teacher relationships, and parent-teacher relationships. With the Reggio Emilia Approach, the students have the freedom to learn what they are interested- it is student originated and teacher framed. Through this paper, I was able to understand the planning and organization that goes into managing your own class as well as understand that both students and teachers can be leaders in the class. |
Plans for Teacher Learning:
Proposal I developed a year-long plan for teacher learning at an elementary school. The ultimate goal was to develop a professional learning community that would benefit the teachers and subsequently the students. The school had a strong culture of trust, so I proposed creating teams to encourage professional education. The plan will foster growth as a school, by creating time during school for the learning to occur as well as full support from the administration. The goal was to create more organized and productive relationships among the teachers and administrators by using different learning strategies outline din my plan. Budget and Purchasing Plan This assignment taught me how to approach a year-long financial plan given a fixed budget. I had to prioritize the items and training sessions based on price and necessity. Other considerations that came into play were amounts of supplies needed for teachers and administrators. I provided rationale for each purchase as well as potential extraneous costs. Since there are numerous resources, it was essential to narrow down the essential items that were necessary to support my proposal. |
Re-purposing Technology Lesson Plan
Adapting lessons to include technology can prove to be a challenge. You must make sure that the technology is adding another element to the lesson that serves to help the children. I was able to choose a technology and re-purpose a lesson plan to include an online game. I ensured that the lesson was aligned with the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers and was accessible for all students. I learned that there are challenges associated with choosing a technology and time management is of the utmost importance due to the magnitude of options. This assignment allowed me to appreciate the affordances of including technology into any one of my lesson plans. |
Coaching and Technology
I developed a lesson plan to teach proper mechanics for hitting a baseball. The challenging part of this is that many athletes are at different points in their learning continuum as well as many athletes have different issues with their swing. Through the use of technology, I was able to create a drill that everyone could benefit from. This was one great example of how technology can actually improve a lesson. This can easily be carried over to the classroom- finding technology that can help students who are excelling and those who are struggling is the goal so that no one is left out or neglected. This lesson showed me that it is important to choose technology that works for an entire team or class. |
Vodcast
I created a vodcast (video podcast) using Windows Movie Maker that highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It was the first time that I had the opportunity to create my own video. I found that using video and audio clips allowed me to easily get my lesson across to the students. This opportunity encouraged me to make more videos in the future to incorporate in the curricula. Additionally, it is a great technology that students could make their own videos individually or in small groups. Unfortunately my Video is too large of a file to upload to the website. |
