801 Leadership and Organizational Development
Dr. Deborah Mcfalone In this course I studied the aspects of exemplary leadership as well as the challenges of leading during uncertain times. Dr. Mcfalone encouraged me to engage in self-examination and reflection about my views and perceptions of leadership. I studied many aspects of leadership such as Emotional Intelligence. I also incorporated the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards for School Leaders that help define strong school leadership in order to promote universal student success. This class allowed me to understand and embody the qualities of a true leader. I also learned that leadership can and should exist at every level. |
KIN 855 Psychosocial Bases of Coaching
Dr. Martha Ewing This course taught me the characteristics of a good coach, which are easily translated to the classroom. I studied the different needs of students: social, psychological, emotional, physical, and developmental. I was able to write my own coaching philosophy to describe the type of leader that I want to be. Many of the lessons I learned like reinforcement theories, how to define success, gender/racial equity, and fairness are prevalent both on the field and in the classroom. Through this class I was able to understand the type of coach and leader that I want to be. |

800 Learning in School and Other Settings
Dr. Danah Henriksen In this class I learned about the most effective learning styles and how to integrate technology, content, and pedagogy seamlessly. I studied different learning styles such as constructivism and behaviorism and found the affordances and constraints for each style. I made both audio and video clips that incorporated all three elements to use in the classroom. Additionally, I had the chance to create a lesson plan using a technology that served to enhance and supplement the task at hand. From this class I learned that there are many benefits to online learning such as flexibility and self direction, yet there are many constraints as well such as losing intimacy and personal/social dynamics. When incorporating technology into a lesson plan, I learned that it should enhance or supplement the desired outcome. |
ED
800 Concepts of Educational Inquiry
Dr. Steven Weiland This course was self-paced and consisted of several modules. I focused on the history of education and how our current system evolved. The knowledge of the creation of our education system allowed us as educators to think about the ways we teach and how we can incorporate educational inquiry in our own classrooms. Throughout the units I read books and articles from scholars in the field of education and was able to reflect on their inquiry to help my own. This class challenged me to learn about concepts that we often overlook. For example, how did our education system get to where it is today? This class proved to be a big learning opportunity for me to help my teaching in the future. |

883 Psychology of Classroom Discipline
Dr. Vicky Mousouli
I found this class to be very influential in what type of teacher I want to be and what environment I want to work in. I learned about the importance of students' needs, how much of an impact one educator can make on a student's life, how to manage challenging children, and how to use positive behavior as a support for children with behavioral issues. The most important concept that came from this class was a chance to create my own classroom management plan that focused on behavior standards/expectations, physical arrangement/environment, student-student relationships/peer learning, student-teacher relationships, and parent-teacher relationships. This plan allowed me to truly explore my own beliefs on classroom discipline and gave me the confidence and desire to want to teach.

857 Promoting Positive Youth Development through Sport
Dr. Daniel Gould From a coaching standpoint, this was one of the most beneficial classes I took in the MAED. I looked at our current athletic programs for youth throughout the United States and internationally and found many issues and solutions. I learned how to encourage positive youth development for different age groups based on psychological and emotional needs, the harm of early specialization, and that the emphasis at a young age should be put on development and having fun, not winning at all costs. In this class I was able to create a program taking into account participants, costs, staffing, programming, and evaluation of the students and community that supported positive youth development and the elementary school level. |
TE
831 Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
Ms. Erica Hamilton This class focused on integrating technology into the classroom. I learned about many theories including Technological, Pedagogical, Content Knowledge (TPAK), Social construction of technology (SCOT), and Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition (SAMR). I learned how to use many free online resources to incorporate into lesson plans. Additionally, I created my first Vodcast to use in the classroom. I was introduced to Glogster, Edmodo, VoiceThread, and Quizlet among many others. This class was incredibly interactive with live video chats with the professor as well as classmates. TE 831 truly showed me how to successfully incorporate technology into the curricula. |

854 Legal and Administrative Issues of Coaching
Mr. Rick Atkinson
This class highlighted the importance of knowing the legal and administrative issues that can arise during an athletic event. In this course I learned about Title IX, risk management, and many legal concepts including hazing, liability, intentional torts, and negligence. I practiced with Moot Court cases where I was able to analyze real life scenarios to find out liability and what Icould have done as a coach or administrator to prevent the problem from happening. I discussed the responsibility of a coach versus an athletic director. I learned that coaching and managing is not all about the sport; there are many more important factors that need to be taken into account. I also had the ability to look at past financial records for the Michigan State Athletic Department to understand funding and the costs to run each individual sport.

824 Leading Teacher Learning
Dr. Nancy Colflesh
This course taught me how to develop a true professional learning community and the amount of time, effort, and money required to create one. I learned the importance of collaboration and trust and that creating these does not happen overnight. I found countless different resources, strategies, and protocols available to educators and understood that planning and trust are key to collaboration. This course taught me that teacher learning is just as valuable as student learning. Administrators and educators alike must understand the importance of creating a true professional learning community. I had the opportunity to create my own plan for leading teacher learning from the proposal, to budget, to actual implementation. I look forward to using the knowledge from this class in my professional career.
